The Magnetic North

Rackwick

The first single from the debut album Orkney: Symphony of The Magnetic North, masterfully brings the listener into the same dreamworld that influenced the creation of the album. ‘Rackwick’, a bay area in Orkney where the main character of Betty tried to drown herself, might sound
like an odd choice for the single but the track itself is thick, warm, melancholy and heavy simultaneously.

It’s a very unusual premise for an album to take, following a woman from the 1700‘s who gets up the duff by a sailor, but it’s ultimately a tale of hope and despair. These two qualities are all over ‘Rackwick’ in what is otherwise a very beautiful, if haunting tune.
The juxtaposition works on this track, but on repeated listens leaves the listener feeling out of place and out of sorts – a potential issue the album may come across depending on its construction.
