I received a physical copy of the new single ‘Start A Fight’ by The Ex Senators, including a long, manifesto-like write up about the band, their origins and the recording of their debut album.
For all the talk they have of being the rebel voice of a new generation and all the name-dropping of the men who’ve worked behind the scenes with them, ‘Start A Fight’ is standard angry punk. The production, mixing and mastering is all great but only serves as a spotlessly clear window to see The Ex Senators through. There’s no hiding the fact that ‘Start A Fight’ just doesn’t work as a single.
They’ve included three copies of the song, the original untouched track; a radio edit; and a remix by Howie Beno that intersperses a soundboard of British politicians, with his Pitchshifter-esque take on the single. The result is the only track worth a damn here, if only for an effeminate Tony Blair mixing it up with twisted, distorted punk. Mark me down as a vote for the opposition.
