Thick coats of reverb adorn each and every instrument on ‘Feathers’, the new single from Symphonic Pictures which occupies that wonderful space between stadium rock and post-rock. There’s the big sounds and big hooks of one, and the interesting experimentation of the other. There are orchestral instruments featured, but I’m struggling to make them out reliably. I can hear elephants, exotic birds and other animals though, so it’s no fault of the production – these instruments are meant to represent something.
It’s a wonderful song to collapse into, to sink and escape. You can half make out the lyrics at times, which to me only adds to the ambiguity and the interpretation of the track. There’s an odd blend in places of shoegaze and jazz present in many places, in what is a very complex track. Sometimes I feel that they’ve taken too much on, at almost five minutes it’s longer than most commercial tracks, yet shorter than its contemporaries no doubt. It’s just a shame that they dragged the arse out of the ending, it doesn’t have that finality that a perfect resolution should.
