There are both weird and wonderful sounds on ‘Headlong To Ground’ the new single from Jupe Jupe. The eponymous track blends pop with country through an accessible rock lens, sprinkling some synths here and there and leaves behind a pair of lipstick lips. It’s gorgeous and light, with a hint of transvestitism about it – like the track is adopting all these different tones and palettes as it dresses up playfully.
The B-side ‘Piranha’ has more bite to it, starting with a tense bass pattern and finger clicks, the mood tightens with Dr Who beams of sound, lazily drawled vocals and shivering synth sounds. Stylistically it sits somewhere between new wave and post punk. There’s still that glam feel to it, but this time round it’s darker and more dilute. As a pair, it’s an impressive tag team capable of making a mark. They’re no champions by any means, but with some time they could be.
