Taken from their recently released debut album, ‘Only You,’ is perhaps a little more conventional in its sound than any of the band’s preceding, sold-out singles. Opening with a Clash-esque drum-roll, the fast and furious tempo continues with crashing cymbals interspersing the unique, distinctive and instantly ‘join-in-if-you-will,’ hook-laden vocals. To be honest, at less than two and a half minutes in total length the whole song is just one humungous hook-fest.
Although not as quirky as earlier songs, it IS still very different from all else out there. (In fact, this song used to be sung in French during the band’s shows – now that’s ‘quirky.’) That said, ‘Only You,’ doesn’t follow the norm of breaking down to an instrumental solo mid-song. Rather, it opts instead to allow Anthony Silvester (who I believe supplied the vocals on this track rather than Rich Cash) to finish his piece before the final minute is given over to frantic, thrashing cymbals, programmed drum beats and a slide guitar solo with a distinct ‘surf,’ feel to it!
But that’s the XX Teens for you!
