Simultaneously releasing two lead singles from upcoming album ‘Willamina Machine’, London songwriter Robinson has returned from a spell in the US with new material that is well worth the wait. Ever since 2010 debut ‘England’s Bleeding’, Robinson has been creating music that is by turns unconventional but accessible, breathing new life into the singer-songwriter genre.
In this case, the singles are – on the face of it – more straightforward than some of Robinson’s previous material. On first listen there are even some tracks on this new album which, arguably, stand out more than those chosen as singles. But dig a little deeper and these two songs become more rewarding.
‘Superlove’ – also the album opener – is a lyrically dexterous piece with an acoustic guitar through line and simple electric riff that prove very catchy. With a verse that see-saws between two chords before breaking into a bigger chorus with layered harmonies and excellent production, it’s a solid and pleasant introduction to Robinson for those who haven’t heard him before.
Meanwhile, ‘Waiting On Cinderella’ is much more vintage Robinson. Turning the fairy tale on its axis, this piano led gem tells the story of a female protagonist who is on the run from an abusive relationship, Robinson playing the imaginary knight in shining armour. There’s no doubting its shadowy roots and subject matter, but this is an uplifting tune with a positive sensibility.
Ultimately, these two tracks bring together everything that makes Robinson a songwriter worth keeping an eye on – melodic, upbeat and well produced, but with a dark, lyrical underbelly that demonstrates a sharp wit.
