The first thing that needs to be said about this album is that it hasn’t aged a day from its release date. What has become ever clearer is that, in amongst the ravaged vocals and feral guitar work, there are some perfect pop moments. Indeed, divorce (if you can) ‘All Apologies’ and ‘Serve The Servants’ from their original contexts and you’ll find some fine, almost R.E.M-ish songs. That’s possibly no coincidence, given that producer Scott Litt worked with R.E.M and was called in here to remix some of the tracks.
The demos show an interesting portrait of the album slowly coming together, Cobain and co laughing and going deliberately over the top in a way that just dares you not to join in with them. The Live’n’Loud disc shows the band at their riotous best and provides a perfect counterpoint to the already well-known Unplugged album.
All in all then, a very good, if in places flawed package that is well worth your 30 quid.
