This EP is like being attacked in your sleep by scarily fast scientists. Key lyrics become furious chants that lock in with the rhythm section , altogether bombarding you with uncomfortably brash stabs and turns, leaving you uneasy, like you’ve just been shouted at… then there’s an inexplicable time change…
This release certainly ticks a lot of the boxes of recent ‘math-rock’ efforts (with a name like ‘Maths Class’, that’s probably a given), even sounding like a lot of bands emerging from the scene today (Johnny Foreigner, Foals, We Are The Physics).
Having said that, Maths Class have succeeded in injecting some energy into this template, if that was even possible.
The only real flaw is, like a lot of bands attempting something similar, they sound very ‘cut and paste’, taping bits and bobs together in order to sound completely insane and surprising. Although, at times, it does work, it sometimes feels like some of the explosions of harmony and chorus could have been better opened up and explored in favour of some of the wackier moments, although I’d imagine the intention of any band is to leave you wanting more…the filthy teases.
