Although delicate and melodic at times, this is mainly a terrifying record! Even the quiet nuances in-between the carnage are tainted with a haunting sense of impending dread, akin to that of the freakiest horror flicks.
This, Black Sun’s fifth album, isn’t supposed to be easy listening, but is surprisingly hypnotic at times, with sections often being repeatedly dragged through the murk for a few solid minutes at a time, occasionally conceding to increase in tension but pulverising throughout. The songs steadily build on solid rhythms, teeming with visceral energy and regularly spiraling into giant pillars of noise, riddled with primal screams. It does work well, although with the first track clocking in at around 19 minutes, you’d better be in for the long haul, as the damage is done consistently for the duration.
In summary, this is an all out assault that many may care to avoid, but for fans of rhythmic, brutal metal across the board, this will almost certainly be an interesting listen.
