Creeping Bent does seem to be something of a haven for Scottish indie legends (and indeed more ‘cult’ acts from across the years) so the appearance of these two bands should come as no surprise. The Leopards are old stagers anyway, though their last release was ten years ago. This time they’ve co-written with Vic Godard, and the result is ‘Rot With Me’, a snarling yet swaggering piece of pop which is in fact redolent of another of the label’s legends, the Nectarine No 9.
Fake Eyelashes feature one Katy McCullars, formerly vocalist with the Secret Goldfish, and it’s strange to think that this band formed in the mid-90s. Mainly because Katy’s voice is as sweet and youthful as ever. ‘The Balcony Song’ is a lovely lilting tune, with as much Dusty Springfield as the Velvet Underground in its makeup and some decidedly understated instrumentation. In fact, a big orchestrated remix would be a rather appealing (if expensive!) prospect. Just goes to show that it’s not just the kids who we should be paying attention to.
