Before listening to this release, the most telling detail may not be the use of the phrase “funk jazz” – which should make even the most liberal indie kid run to the hills – but the quote “right on the groove” from Robert Mousey Thompson. For the uninitiated, he was drummer with James Brown, and is someone who should know about the groove.
Stick the CD on and it becomes obvious that his Glasgow-based eight-piece have done their greatest fan proud. The lead track is decidedly funky, but in a good way – with its “wakka wakka” sound it could easily soundtrack a 70s detective show and as well as the more obvious references – Chic, Funkadelic – as well as nods to Dundonians the Average White Band. Craig Charles (6Music Funk & Soul show and Corrie cabbie) is also a fan its seems, meaning that while they may not be picked up by all the trendiest indie mags and websites, this could be a band going places.
