This is one of these albums that kicks you hard in the stomach, right from the very start. The sound here is very raw and brutal – so much so that, at times, you get the feeling that the band are going to pounce out of the speakers and attack you.
This initial attack is softened somewhat, though, by the beautiful minor-key chord changes that seep through upon second and third listens. On top of all the sonic violence, the band’s two vocalists share duties between the tracks and their voices gel beautifully.
It can be a real drag listening to an album if there’s two voices pulling you between them to get attention and so it pays off here that each singer plays to their own – and the band’s collective – strengths. The combination of these factors makes for a very propulsive album that never lets you forget it’s on the stereo.
