We Are The Physics

There is something very curious about the title of We Are The Physics’ latest offering – Your Friend The Atom.
Could it be alluding to the evolution from single-celled organisms to the comparative anatomy and ancestral DNA of like-minded species as an allegory for the unfettered relentlessness of the human spirit. Does that sound horribly pretentious and misguided? Of course it does! We Are The Physics strip away any notion of a self-righteous journey and nip the tedious discussion of existential themes in the bud by merely giving us a record that is a sheer injection of disco punk adrenaline from start to finish.

The album’s debut single ‘Goran Ivanisevic’ – a reference to the wildcard Wimbledon champ – proves syllabically to have one of the finest choruses on the record. ‘Cluedo’ is littered with freak out math rock moments while ‘Dildonics’ only serves to augment their sardonic yet bizarre appeal. ‘All My Friends are JPEGs’ takes a swipe at social media culture with a humorous take on the looming damage of apocalyptic proportions that it may have on human relationships.

With Gang Of Four’s Thomas McNeice at the helm on their sophomore effort the band have been able to shake off the shackles of any novelty shtick that preceded them after their first effort on This Is Fake DIY and have thus carefully avoided the ‘difficult second album’ cliche by providing us with a sound-scape of geeky electronica and jagged guitar fury that is brilliantly infectious throughout.
Taking their cues from the likes of Devo and Jonathan Richman before them the Glasgow post-punk outfit have crafted a subversive blend of freakout mutant rock that is quite happy to honor the decisive pop structure it infiltrates while allowing them the opportunity to ‘rip it up and start again.’
