King Tuts New Years Revolution has come round again providing a month-long festival of the best grassroots music in Glasgow.
Tonight’s sold out event starts with Lost Tickets – not to judge a book by its cover the indie-looking teens had a metal / hard rock kick to their sound and played a thoroughly enjoyable set.
Sister Madds were up next, starting their set with ‘601’ since today is the 6th of January. Their energy is infectious and their perfectly-timed fast-paced rock-pop with witty lyrics gave off some Arctic Monkeys energy that had most of the crowd jumping quite early on for a school night. Tina Sandwich moved from first on the bill to topping it over the last year, and Sister Madds are sure to be headlining these in future as well.
A hard act to follow and Caseveti came to the stage with a far more stoic presence; again you can’t judge people immediately as the set moved though dreamscape indie that turned into buildups and huge crescendos that any fan of We Were Promised Jetpacks would love.
The headline tonight was Tina Sandwich on the back of her excellent single ‘Joni’ released last week. Tilly has an excellent stage presence with a huge smile beaming throughout the entire set which is difficult to pin down to a specific genre – from the introspective singer songwriter musings of ‘Joni’ to the rock and roll swagger of ‘Fast Cars’ via the cover of dance classic ‘Perfect (Exceeder)’, the set keeps everyone guessing and dancing at the same time.
All in all it’s hard to beat as a showcase of the best of Glasgow’s new and upcoming music.
