Stupid as wood? I hope they aren’t referring to me? As if…
Scratchy, skew whiff guitar-bass-drums make a mighty leftfield racket topped off by a great female voice, part spoken, part sung. If this single had appeared in 1981 on Rough Trade there would be a queue to anthologise, celebrate and deify the oddly named TVEGC. ‘La Mer’ sounds simultaneously out-of-time and immediate. It’s a truly glorious, many tentacled beast of a song, as is the aforementioned ‘Stupid As Wood’ which sounds like a mutant rockabilly band falling down a steep staircase while trying to finish the song. It contains some fiery, filthy guitar lines and a manic, panicked male voice. Both songs rumble along like out of control juggernauts driven on towards insanity by some of the dirtiest, deepest bass lines known to human ears. Exhilarating stuff.
