The similarities in writing style, musically and lyrically between Luke Taylor and Paddy McAloon of Prefab Sprout are quite apparent. However, this is unmistakably The Hot Puppies, but in more direct and determined mood than on their excellent debut album, ‘Under The Crooked Moon.’ No more the fanciful lyrics and almost burlesque feel, but political comment highlighted by Bec Newman’s exquisite vocal performance.
Released as a taster for the forthcoming ‘Blue Hands’ follow-up album ‘King Of England’ bounces along with a hooky chorus, the harmonies of which really fly in the face of the accusing sentiment.
It may require a few listens before appreciation dawns, but this is most definitely a radio-friendly single, and may just be the catalyst to greater things for The Hot Puppies.
