As much as their ambition and passion might sometimes here outstrip their nascent ability, there is no denying that these guys have got attitude by the bucketload.
That’s what carries them through. If you were a fan of Travis when they were in their wonderful ‘More Than Us’ EP/’The Man Who’ album period, then these mid-section songs are aimed directly at you. They’ve got Dougie Payne’s sure touch of melody and there’s also Healy’s gift for vocal phrasing.
This only becomes a problem on songs such as ‘Have To Laugh’. Here, the rigidity of the riffs hampers the band’s natural flair and wish to just freely swim in an ocean of melody. A wee word of warning, boys – if you want to be true classicists, you have to scale the barriers first.
