Now THIS is more like it! Without doubt the best single / EP I’ve listened to for ages! Probably not everyone’s cup of herbal (what am I saying – definitely not to everyone’s taste) but I guess Plaaydoh never set out with that being their intention.
I must confess to knowing very little of Plaaydoh, but if they were around in John Peel’s day, they’d have featured every night for a very long time.
The first of the five tracks – all short and very sharp with total running time just 8 minutes and thirty seven seconds – is ‘Oh Jay’ with vocalist Alimacadoo (Alison) screaming the lyrics over the top of crashing cymbals and thumping bass. ‘Purple Mini Jack’ starts with a deep bass line that is given prominence at various other points. A simple deep-sounding ‘plinky’ guitar line lies over the top (you can tell I play no instruments myself!) and again the shouted female vocals compete for attention. ‘Boyscout’ is quieter and more melodic in nature – if a little threatening, whilst track four, ‘Halopeeno’ again has the bass in key role. This time though, whilst the vocals are still shouty, they are harmonised to certain extent and the resultant sound is like the Go! Team possessed by evil spirits with ADHD. ‘Domino’ the final track is an instrumental featuring synths and again with a heavy emphasis on the bass.
