Imagine if the 80s had bypassed Scotland. Johnny and pals, we assume, weren’t even alive then, so either their parents’ record collections have been absorbed through the womb, or some other force is at work here. ‘Titan’ is the lead track on this debut EP and is a flurry of funky basslines, and tight rhythmical drumming. It’s got the pop nous of Haircut 100 and Spandau Ballet, but packs a big chorus, a “left hook right hook” chant which would go down well at a Scott Harrison fight (Jo Boxers, anyone?). And not a mid-Atlantic accent in sight.
‘Casino’ is more like the plethora of funk bands who came out of Scotland in the wake of the 80s new romantic scene – (Hue & Cry, Wet Wet Wet even APB). ‘Elle Diablo’ has more sensitive backing vocals and the whole tune would have more impact with a wee bit of shouting as on ‘Titan’. Still, these boys have an ear for a hit and with hooks like these they certainly know how to pack a punch! (You’re fired. Ed.)www.myspace.com/johnnyandthegiros
