Having a Sinead O’Connor vocal cameo on one’s song usually makes people approach it with trepidation. While Ms. O’Connor undoubtedly possesses a fine voice, her views and forthright delivery can sometimes unbalance a song. O’Connor’s voice provides some welcome light and shade on what is a very rough-sounding track. The song delivers Ian Brown’s thoughts on Government having soldiers in Iraq, savaging what he sees as gross wrongdoing. We are left in no uncertain terms as to his feelings on the subject. Its lyrics are designed to sing along to and think along with and are married to a stop-start rhythm knowingly stolen from the best Motown records. With Brown’s next tour forthcoming, it’ll be a surprise if this isn’t an immediate live favourite.
