Girobabies have not released any music since “beforetimes”, as Mark McGhee refers to pre-March 2020, and this new track in BM’s opinion may break new territory.
Restrained and quite downbeat in the instrumentation (bit of bass, keyboards and synth washes and a mid-paced beat), it is almost a ballad, with Mark’s voice given some echo in the mix. He rap/sings through some pretty dark verses – (“heaven knows I’m miles away – on the journey to be the best me”) – (“late for the funeral what a daftie, best laid plans end up quite badly”) – and it is uncomfortable listening in places.
It is however a great tune, haunting and in some ways reminiscent of The The’s peerless ‘This Is The Day’, and the lyrics whether autobiographical or not certainly speak to this listener. The Giros are back baby, and that is definitely something to be happy about.
