Extra Life specialise in “dark, romantic pop”, as they proclaim loudly on their press release and on the album also. The album’s sound ably bears this out. That they have been selected to do the current tour support for My Bloody Valentine and Spiritualized should come as no surprise. They share the same love of noise-pop and crunchy feedback as My Bloody Valentine and also have Spiritualized’s sense of finding the operatic in everyday things.
There are some tough nuggets to chew on in there. Your ears’ll be coasting along, when suddenly a sonic bump’ll appear, you’ll hit it and you will be thrown back into the sonic maelstrom anew. Every listen reveals a new layer, which means it is like listening to a new record every time you put it on. Again, like My Bloody Valentine and Loveless, the louder you play this record, the more you will get from it. It isn’t so desperate to get an audience as to kow tow to the man and throw everything into the pot. It is, instead, a singular record, with a pure mind and vision all of its own.
