We often hear about perfect summer songs but this gorgeous, dark, moving single is the perfect winter song, particularly as since I first listened to it the world outside has been continually covered in layers of snow and ice. Yet its sound isn’t cold but warm. ‘Sleep The Winter’ is an beautiful song. Perfect for both hiding from and keeping the cold out. With its delicately picked out guitars, violin, bass and male/female vocals, eagleowl have recorded an exquisite song that’s far more than the sum of its parts. It seems so simply constructed yet sounds so fantastic. ‘Laughter’ is almost as wonderful with its deep, brooding bass, layers of drones and a looping guitar refrain all patiently building up in gentle waves before dropping away to be replaced by a lonesome female vocal. It’s all over before you can blink, a short, atmospheric song in two parts. Sure, there are plenty of bands around working in similar territory but eagleowl are a very special band in a league of their own.
