The Kris Drever Trio were the last minute replacement support for this final Celtic Connections gig.
Drever announcing to the crowd “I’ve always loved Calexico and I was coming along anyway when Donald phoned me…”
They played a set of new mostly material – with no LAU songs, though they ended with ‘Harvest Gypsy’.
The first three songs from Calexico were brand new from their forthcoming album.
Joey Burns asked between tunes: “Do you like our new direction?” before telling a little story behind each new song.
The new material has a summery pop Americana vibe compared to their more Tex Mex Mariachi standards like ‘Minas De Cobre’ – a song met with huge cheers as the intro boomed over the PA.
