Bleak Falls cite Deftones and Cancer Bats as key influences. And they’ve certainly got the iron-edged riffs of the former and the metallic melodies of the latter, but what floats in-between, sometimes a little unsure of itself and uneasily, is a true voice, all of their own. And it is a pretty thing.
They don’t ever fall into the trap of over-emoting but they certainly know how to show emotion in such tracks as ‘Dear Brother’ and ‘Chapter Eighteen’, tears and clashing guitar chords going straight for the heart without ever seeming forced or sounding manipulative. Bleak Falls know, then, that rage is a useful energy when it is left to simmer and stew. The result is a record of true sonic strength, heart and beauty.
