Black Affair have just completed a tour support slot with media favourites New Young Pony Club, so immediately you feel there must be some pedigree. You then discover, unless you are far more knowledgeable about these matters than me, that ‘main man’ Steve Mason was formerly in the Beta Band before their break-up. So, yes, you’d be right to expect some quality. And you won’t be disappointed.
Describing the music as ‘Electro R’n’B’ Black Affair have released this single as a precursor to their debut album, due early in the New Year. Heavy on the synths, beats and ‘tak!’ ‘attack!’ chants, it reflects 80’s style pop music, in the vein of Depeche Mode, Human League and stomp and pomp of the likes of Erasure and Yazoo.
The remix by Suicidedogz is slower, deeper and darker, incorporating dub style backing- track, with more of a hip-hop feel. The ‘bell’ sound does become a bit monotonous, however, and halfway through this version I found myself switching off.
‘Blush’ is the main ‘b-side,’ though. It is certainly more interesting than the remixed title track, and has hints of Kraftwerk running right through the core.
Altogether, this is a quite pleasant and interesting single, if not entirely original in sound.
