There is a battle raging inside my head as I listen to Blabbermouth’s new single, ‘I Return.’
You see, my genetic make-up means that those little numbskulls (remember them?) that run around my brain and control all my key decisions sport coloured mohawks, tattoos and wear studded leather jackets. However, there has been a recent incursion by a group of essentially gentle Numbskulls who are kind of mellow and laid back, and fight their cause not through antagonism, but by persuasion of words and melodies.
This is the second Blabbermouth single I have reviewed, and like 2008’s offering ‘Something I Need’ / ‘Blabbermouth’s Funeral’ this single continues singer songwriter Steve Thomson’s (aka Blabbermouth) apparent preoccupation with Death. In this case, ‘a sad cold spirit’ is seeking a way of getting back in touch with its true love.
Perky little song, eh?!
It starts out slowly with Steve singing alone with an acoustic guitar, it builds in depth and texture (but not pace I have to say) with the addition of a string section. It’s a nice ‘dreamy’ atmospheric and though provoking track that reminds me in places of some of Greg Lake’s solo work.
Not one for me personally, but little punk Numbskulls of mine have at least been coaxed into a dialogue with the peaceful invaders. Maybe there is room for all Numbskulls to live sisde by side in complete harmony?
Nah! But credit where it’s due – Blabbermouth is good at what he does, and as far as acoustic and folk-based music goes, he’s at the top of my (admittedly pretty short) list.
