‘Chorinho,’ / ‘Choro’ is a traditional style of Brazilian music, played principally by flute, pandeiro (hand-held drum) and cavaquinho (small four stringed guitar.) Its literal translation is ‘little lament’ but as in this case, the music is frequently upbeat.
The Agua de Choro have incorporated electronic sounds, sax and added percussion, including a cajon (box / crate drum) to give their single release ‘Improvise’ a more wholesome sound.
Singer Angelita Jiminez has such a smooth, rich and sexy voice, whilst the musicianship of the other four members emanate a real ‘feel- good’ vibe.
Describing this merely as traditional Brazilian folk music infused with jazz sensibilities may be enough to dissuade any readers from checking this out. However, whilst there are echoes of exotic holiday-hotel dance bands, in a household of perpetual punk and classic rock, I found it quite charming and relaxing!
I can’t say you’ll like it…. just don’t dismiss it.
