Kilwinning isn’t known for its alternative rock scene… But Vukovi have been working for over ten years to change that. August 1st saw their new single ‘Creep Heat’ let loose and by God, it’s come tearing out of the traps.
Released on Sharp Tone Records and first spun by Alyx Holcombe on Radio One, this is a furious explosion of nightmarish noise and quasi-religious exclamations before settling into a huge sounding metal core chorus.
There’s a lot of production under this track, especially in the verses. It avoids falling into the trap of sounding too electronic and keeps the rock endoskeleton – something bigger bands have struggled to manage. The guitars snarl over processed drums and distorted voices before they dissolve into a dreamy pre chorus. The chorus, however, is huge. So much so, that when we get back into the verses, we’re in a louder place than we started. Established fans of Vukovi are no strangers to the dynamic of electro-rock, but what’s been delivered is sharper and has more edge to it. This track is a great sign of things to come on any forthcoming album.
Vocalist Janine Shilstone has even directed the video for this track. Blending the religious overtones with overt sex appeal and shibari – Madonna would be proud. Speaking about directing the video, Janine said: “I want this to be a catalyst for more women to start believing they are more than capable of directing; the industry and future generations need us. I’m always learning and growing as I go, there is never a right time to start other than now. I’m very grateful to be so well supported and believed in by Hamish and our team. I feel seen”.
The result should be encouraging to anyone with similar aspirations.
