From its quiet beginnings, to its heavy twist and turns, White Fields and Open Devices sounds like a journey of epic proportions, to the top a desolate, snow-capped peak, larger than the one on the front cover. Sounding quiet and sensitive at times, with perfect flashes of harmony, billowing layers of vocals and echoing guitars then build and build on each other to incredible crescendo, crashing like cold winds, only to be suddenly stripped away again, leaving sharp, clear hits of intelligent rock.
It’s very rare to find a band that can create so many different moods whilst still sounding consistent, and even rarer to find one that does it so well. Their sense of urgency and rhythm is exciting and active, whereas on songs like ‘Happy Accident’ and opener ‘Altered Beast’ there’s is so much care taken in painting the scene, and creating an atmosphere so lush and rich with layers that, at times, it’s breathtaking. If you listen hard enough, you can almost hear the snow falling.
