With droning synth lines and haunting melodies cutting through beneath, creating powerful space-age soundscapes, Transept’s Buff as Fuck album takes the listener on a journey. It begins with the gradually building, low static tones of ‘Happysburg’, a 15 minute long track which builds a real sense of tension and sets a solid tone for the record.
From there you are taken through the almost childlike ‘Sea Sentinel’, with its soft melody juxtaposed against the shrill static and piercing vocals. The album carries the listener through softly yet without ever letting you settle down, a particular highlight being ‘Muscle Beach’ which delivers a strong marching snare line which builds and builds over a melancholic melody until breaking through into a powerful sound wall full of hope.
The album closes with the most traditionally structured song – a version of Art Garfunkel’s ‘Bright Eyes’ and this solid well-rooted song gives you, for the first time in the record, something to really hold on to and leaves the album with a purposeful tone.
