Earlier this month Is This Music? were invited along to The OVO Hydro to see The Wild Things open up for what was (potentially) the last ever KISS show on Scottish soil.
The band, fronted by Sydney Rae White, joined by her husband Rob Kendrick on guitar, her brother Cam on bass and best friend Pete on Drums, recently completed work on their upcoming second album ‘Afterglow’.
The album was co-produced by Pete Townshend, who also featured on previous singles ‘Only Attraction’ and ‘Lay On, Take Off’, and is a long-time friend of the band after Syd and Rob met him years back, took his email address and, in their words “basically bullied our way into his life”.
Now, they’re opening up for KISS, which is no easy task, but, for The Wild Things, it’s almost the kind of thing they specialise in, as just last year they kicked off proceedings at Madison Square Garden in support of The Who!
Tonight they take the stage some twenty minutes after doors, as a steady stream of fans, many dressed in face paint as you’d come to expect at a KISS show, slowly pour into the arena. The band deliver an entertaining and well-honed set that is dripping with energy and attitude.
Opening tracks ‘Loaded Gun’ and ‘Only Attraction’ see Kendrick throwing himself around the stage, his blue hair a blur, while Sydney Rae White delivers gritty and powerful vocals from centre stage. Also on display tonight are recent single’s ‘Paradise’ and ‘Heaven Knows’, as well as ‘You’re Really Something’, taken from their debut album of the same name.
Overall the band put on a great display and undoubtedly won over countless new fans tonight, the stage never once seeming too big for the quartet, who will look to make appearances at venues of this magnitude a staple for them in the coming years.
The Wild Things embark on a UK tour this October, including a date at Glasgow Garage on Tuesday 10th October. Tickets are available over at www.ents24.com.
