The Warlocks may not be the biggest draw in town but a dark and damp night, Glasgow Barfly and the mean and moody style of the band were all made for each other.
After a first half focused on recent material from the ‘Heavy Deavy Skull Lover’ release, the band proceeded to throw in some old classics that got the approval of the crowd. The latest material appears darker in tone than the earlier material but the feel and rhythmic flow is a constant of any show by the band. There may not have been any frantic movement in the crowd but there was a continual movement and head nodding of approval.
Early hit ‘Shake The Dope Out’ still remains a classic and the enthusiastic crowd members bellowing for their favourite track were pleased when ‘Hurricane Heart Attack’ was unveiled. The Warlocks are a cool band and their casual put down of the noisy revellers was in keeping with their style and tradition.
The psychedelic drone and fuzz approach to music is not as popular as it used to be so when a band gets it right, they deserve to be listened to and cherished. The Warlocks have been this band for a number of years now and it can only be hoped they remain in this position for many years to come.
