SIX bass guitars? Crazy. But also, kind of interesting. Sadly, although six bassists feature on this release from the grunge icons, none appear simultaneously. There’s much to admire, the band still capable of coming up with some great sludgy hooks, but their guests drag them in odd directions – Trevor Dunn straying into free jazz territory, Kirst Novolseich trawling his Croat folk roots, but Redd Kross’s Steve Macdonald throws out old-school metal riffs while Washington punk icon Buzz roars over the top. It’s regular bassman Dale Crover who’s the party pooper, with a couple of contributions amounting to disposable nursery rhymes. In all, an idea which far outweighs its execution.
