Motherwell based outfit The LaFontaines play their biggest headline show to date at a sold out Classic Grand. However, tonight’s performance proves to be anything but standard gig-fare as the band who combine elements of hip hop, and indie guitar fusion also have a few surprises up their sleeve.
Putting their own slant on a would-be club night called ‘Club Fontaine’ the guys manage to pay homage to elements of the 50s Big Band and Swing eras throughout the proceedings albeit with a matching dress code to add to the suave and distinguished vibe of the evening.
The band take to the stage at 9pm sharp in front of a wave of giddy fan boys who line the front rows in awe of the captivating spectacle that the guys have so carefully orchestrated for the momentous event. While dressed in obligatory tuxedos to mark the decidedly festive occasion, this arrangement is anything but a formality and instead serves to creates a sense of unison amongst a collective who have spent the past few years tirelessly honing their craft.
Charismatic frontman Kerr Okan is in fine form as he engages the crowd, arousing rapturous applause and chants of “The La-The La-The LaFontaines!” which has become a staple with their dedicated fanbase throughout their live gigs. Recent tours with The Blackout, 3OH!3, and Sonic Boom Six have ensured that The Fonts have continued to develop a loyal fanbase throughout the UK and tonight’s show manages to put a finer point on illustrating just why that is. Early crowd pleaser ‘Light Up The Background’ has an anthemic quality that muses on the disaffected youth of today while Kerr’s trademark drawl tantalises throughout with his creative wordplay.
Special guest appearance from Twin Atlantic member Barry Mckenna, who contributes cello to a new track, is one of the surprises littered throughout the evening while ‘Shark In The Water’ fascinates with its soaring choruses and jagged guitar fury. As confetti showers the audience on closing track ‘Paperchase’ this deliberate attempt at a cabaret soaked evening is merely a celebration of just how far the band have come in recent years and based on the reaction to tonight’s show will no doubt ensure they continue to gather even more well deserved momentum.
