Stephen McLaren has made several great albums and this is his new single, with an album to be released later this year.
This track has his trademark pounding backbeat and keyboard combination plus spaced out vocals, speaking of the trappings of fame, and photogenic moments… It starts with a random snippet of news verbiage, before the main track kicks in – there are some great synth sounds on this, from the twee to the parping.
The lyrics are cryptic but some of the lines are killer – “Americans used to be cool” indeed!
There is a yearning quality about this track, like it has been beamed in from somewhere else, and a melancholy, despite the slightly ravey trappings of the beats.
McLaren is a singular artist and we are lucky to have him.
