This isn’t new – it’s poppy, guitar driven songs complete with upbeat drums, melodic punky bass lines and a singer that sounds like what you would expect from the impossible lovechild of Ian Curtis and Morrissey.
It is actually such a shame that it’s so easy to make these observations because these songs, and the band themselves sound bright and full of energy. It reminds me of a happier Joy Division and occasionally like Pixies songs played faster, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I mean, these songs are catchy, confident and have the sound that surely beckons student dance floors and beyond, but there are only so many times this can be done and still be interesting or exciting.
That being said, there seems to be a pop sensibility in here that would suggest there’s room for development across future releases, and with enough experience and exposure this could very well take on exciting, new forms. In the meantime though, this will surely be the soundtrack of many a jovial night out in Glasgow and having already been championed by local radio and those in the know, perhaps they’ll get the chance to expand sooner rather than later, which would be grand.
