Lovemusic is one of the best places in the world to be on a Saturday afternoon – a proper record shop.
There are all formats, ahead of the curve releases that bands have obviously handed in, all tastes catered for… the “Milngavie Folk Club” poster (and my spellcheck really hated that) mixes with Metallica and new punk releases – well, if you thought both were dead then think again). The very genial owner obviously cares, and this instore – which follows appearances from the likes of Moby and The Enemy as well as previous Record Store Day events which have given Betty a whole lotta pleasure.
Anyway, today was the turn of “one third” of Edinburgh combo Mount Doubt – just acoustic guitar/vocals plus acoustic drums – there is a special feeling that comes with standing around the racks of product watching a band playing, the sun shining outside and various random punters opening the door and either deciding not to come in, or to come in, and MD dealt with this pretty well.
And what the select audience heard was pretty darn good, this is a songwriter who knows what he is doing – in front of his mum, and he forgot the lines to one of the new songs…!
But the songs were good, the voice was strong, and at times quite amazing, and like BM said before, this was quite special – some T Break and Belladrum footage makes Betty want to have the full MD experience because there were some great words, great melodies and something which transported us, within and without Lovemusic, as the Tartan Army footsoldiers walked by, and the general public milled, we were truly lost in music (with apologies to Sister Sledge, and The Fall).
Song titles noted down, but immaterial, just a great series of moments in the gestation of what BM thinks is a pretty good musical thing – a great taster before Tenement Trail (not aka the John Cleese Social)… anyway, Mt. Doubt, Betty salutes you… all one third of you!
