For the first local showcase for the Core festival we were joined in the Hug and Pint by Wreaking Joy, KUTE and Moni Jitchell.
Wreaking Joy did not waste any time and the crowd were swinging fists from the first chord. The group from Dundee somehow managed to be simultaneously violent and joyful with a frenetic fast-paced set.
Next up was Kute. “Let’s show them what hardcore is about” declared lead singer Amy – addressing her parents there to see their first show. Kute bring a bit more melody to the evening without dropping any of the energy.
To complete the trio of in-your-face hardcore acts was Moni Jitchell playing their last show of a busy year with their noticeable name being mentioned regularly through the music calendar.
Moni play some uncompromising noise rock that doesn’t let up throughout the set. The 12 string electric guitar is a rare sight but provides a perfect wall of noise against the punching drums and vocals and it’s easy to see why so many people are talking about the band since the release of ‘Unreal’ in May.
If tonight’s showcase is anything to go by, “A celebration of noise” is very accurate and it is worth keeping a lookout for what is coming up for the Core festival and hopefully further showcases.
