Folk music has gone all trendy of late, thanks mainly to the Mumfords for bringing an underground movement blinking into the light.
However, it seems that this ironically-named quartet would be quite happy for this genre to quietly head back to its roots. A cover of a song by 60s folkie Shirley Collins sets their stall out, while there’s hints of Sandy Denny in Emily Scott’s voice, nicely complimented by the vocal of Rob St John.
The dozen tracks here employ subtle synthesizers, but they merely add body to an array of less robust instruments – a Victorian pedal harmonium, a wine-glass orchestra. Thankfully, there’s enough depth in the lullaby-like tunes to make for an engrossing listen. HHHH
