Another lovely evening in Glasgow down at the Quay (the producers must pray for these on a Wednesday) and Edinburgh singer songwriter Neil Pennycook brings his Meursault thing across the M8, and very wonderful this live session is.
As the sun shone in the back of the BBC Foyer at Pacific Quay Neil and his newish co-conspirators (lovely accompanying vocals, drums, bass and fiddle) played songs mainly from the current (fourth) album ‘I Will Kill Again’ (out now on Song by Toad Records), in-between getting something like the third degree from host Roddy Hart (in a friendly, concerned way) about “why the long silence?”
He was in good voice during tracks like ‘The Mill’ and ‘Bel Ami’. Violinist Robin gave a great lead vocal on the “Scottish cover” which turned out to be ‘Season of the Witch’ by Donovan, “an obvious dedication” to possibly someone electioneering as we speak…”
Things got more brutal during the title track and he also played a “new old” track which BM did not catch the name of. In between quips about the thin line between bald hipster and Harry Hill there was a lot of warmth, some excellent playing and a generally good vibe – he is playing Doune The Rabbit Hole this summer, and this performance bodes well for future dates…
