The debut album from the Derby four-piece is a bright and jangly effort with vaudevillian overtones. Sounding at times like Blur or early Stone Roses, there’s plenty of wacky Coral-sounding skits and Belle and Sebastian style tweeness.
Unfortunately it doesn’t come close to any of the above mentioned in terms of flair or memorability. The vocals can’t really be heard or made out most of the time so they might as well be mumbling backwards. The twang pop of ‘Terry is the Chicago Sun’ is fun and and summery and the xylophone, banjo and harmonising on ‘Thinking in French’ add a new dimension to an already decent tune but too many of the rest of the tracks just pass by.
Worth a few listens maybe but only really pass marks from me.
