“Indie-pop” says the PR, but it’s more mainstream than indie, not that this is a detraction from the obvious quality on show.
‘By The City Lights’ is an enthusiastic radio-grower and, if you believe the hype, Lights And Sounds are mixing with all the right industry people that would gobble up this sort of young man pop. Their sound is underpinned by clever piano work that gives them an edge in this simple-pop-song genre by adding a slice of maturity that others just don’t have. The arrangements and production also have a gloss that is usually hard to find in bands so young (singer Max Britton is still a teenager). Second track ‘Make it Count’ doesn’t let the good start slip and flutters out simple yet effective melodies and hooks that are an A & R mans dream. Young boys, mature songs, should be easy to sell, right?
