Juffrage frustrates. Lots to love on the Small Fires EP, but lots to be annoyed by as well.
First, there’s the fact that three of the songs on the EP are different versions of the same track. What do we call an album where three songs are essentially the same thing only mixed differently? No, not AC/DC’s latest release, we call it a “single”. It’s a damn good single though.
The Juffrage aesthetic is a bit further afield from the Neutral Milk Hotel in central Beirut. The embrace of electronics on “the third remix” of ‘Small Fires’ in particular is satisfying
‘HHV’, the only non-Small Fires track on the album seems to take the road back into Beirut a bit incautiously. It’s okay, but too oblique to really grab. Not much of an EP, but a great single.
