This is the debut album from two East Midlands 18 year olds who describe their sound as
‘Pop/Alternative/Emo’. Unfortunately, their major problems are firstly that they sound like Keane, and secondly the album has been produced by Hugh Padgham, who seems to have layered the music with the same ‘over-produced’ sound that he has used on works by Phil Collins and McFly in the past. This has given them a polished, radio friendly sound, which has led to their singles being given major airplay on Radio 6. In fact the single ‘Pink Squares‘ is one of the high points of the album, showing a sense of urgency, and exhibiting some of the alternative roots which they claim to have. Much of the rest of the album seems to just pass by, with little of note going on – that isn’t to say that it is bad, just that the songs would benefit from sounding a bit rawer. With the band having a growing reputation as a live act, it is a shame that the passion from those gigs is missing for the most part in their debut album. However, there is a lot of promise, and they are certainly a band to look out for in the forthcoming festival season.
