Hot Chip leapt into action with the thumping introduction of ‘Thieves In The Night’, from their newest album ‘One Life Stand’. A kaleidoscope of lights accompanied them, never failing to get the attention of the audience, who were dancing non-stop from the very beginning.
As expected, the set list was mainly songs from the new album, including ‘Alley Cats’, ‘Take It In’ and ‘One Life Stand’, the more disco-esque tracks on the new album. Another highlight was ‘Brothers’, the band playing this live for the first time at the show, and creating a laid back contrast to most of the other songs.
The band themselves were like a sort of musical pick and mix; all shapes and sizes, colours and personalities. Although not saying much to the audience, their enthusiasm was reflected in the energy they put into each song. With re-worked classics providing a nice surprise for older fans, and well as fantastic renditions of their newest songs, the show had something for everyone. Their reworked tracks included ‘And There Was A Boy From School’, which added steel drums to the introduction giving it a livelier feel, as well as a completely different introduction to ‘Ready for the floor’, which was unrecognisable until Alexis Taylor began with the lyrics. ‘Hold On’ and ‘Over and Over’ were other crowd pleasers, which created a brilliant atmosphere as the venue was completely full, everyone singing along, and dancing in the multicoloured lights. For the encore, they played ‘Slush’, and unexpected yet still appreciated choice. The only criticism I would have of the show was that it wasn’t long enough, a mere hour and fifteen minutes. That aside, it was still an excellent way to spend a cold Friday night in Glasgow, and I’m sure most of the audience would agree.
