Where do I start? ‘A Sufi and A Killer’ is as eclectic as its name suggests. But you wouldn’t expect any less from a rapping yoga teacher from Las Vegas. There is a heavy trip-hop influence throughout the album, similar to the likes of Massive Attack and Tricky. Various techniques have been used to create unique sounds, with grainy, scratchy vocals, saxophone and drums as the main instruments. ‘I’m Given’ is a particularly interesting track and definitely stands, its warped synthetic sounds strangely listenable. This then fades into Arabian beats with rough scraggly vocals giving it a real beatnik edge.
Overall it’s a mixed up album at times with such variation in sound and effects, as well as minimal lyrics overlaid by strong instrumentals, but the uniqueness of Gonjasufi’s voice make it worth the listen.
