The latest single by Gates of Light, the current moniker of Scottish artist Louise Quinn and her co-conspirators, is out now on the mighty Last Night from Glasgow label.
A fairly electronic affair, it fairly burbles with machine-generated noise, over which Ms. Quinn’s vocals, maybe slightly treated, are silky and deliberately deadpan – the percussion and other effects sound almost automatic but every so often there are those slightly wonky diversions that have been the hallmark of LQ’s endearingly weird take on pop over the years in previous incarnations such as A Band Called Quinn and further back as Hardbody.
Reminding BM somewhat of maybe Dubstar at their most sophisticated, with wee touches of later Abba and possibly Goldfrapp, it is a pleasing concoction with a very catchy feel to it, and bodes well for a possible album (release date maybe not confirmed as yet) and at least one live date in Glasgow in the summer.
