Gabby Young is by far one of the UK’s best new female artists yet she still seems to one of the country’s best kept secrets. This new album shows a wide range of vocal talents and characteristics that would put Florence Welch to shame as Young goes from sounding jazzy and sexy on ‘Umm…’ to oozing with quirky confidence and authority, armed with a megaphone on ‘The Ones That Got Away’ to vulnerable and timid on ‘Too Young To Die’.
The sheer quirkiness of Miss Young and her Other Animals is a key factor on ‘We’re All In This Together’, rejecting perfection and just creating good music and having fun in the process seems to be the main philosophy of the band. And why the hell not?
There is, however, a soulfulness that comes alive in the title track, showing that there is a serious side to the album, full of emotion expressed through, not just Young’s powerful distinctive vocals, but a variety of weird and wonderful instruments from banjos and mandolins to djembe and steel drums.
One point also worth mentioning is that her cabaret charm and majestic vocals have also captured the heart of legendary director Tim Burton who personally asked for a copy of the album after seeing her performance at the BAFTA afterparty this year. And it’s not surprising when some of her songs such as album closer ‘Two By Two’ sound as if they’ve been penned by Danny Elfman himself.
