Perfect pop in in short supply these days, and I’m not talking about the slop that Cowell and his ilk eject from whatever orifice is closest to the bodily organ they use to incubate today’s hits. No, since the meltdown of Motown, pure pop has come largely from the UK, but since its 80s heyday has only occasionally produced a tune to rival those delivered by Soft Cell, OMD and the Human League, whose admittedly cheesy synths tempered punk’s ear for a hook with a softer, more chart-friendly edge.
Findo Gask are a 4-piece from eastern Scotlnd (not too far from the town that gives them their peculiar name). And while they may, given their youth, barely remember the bands namechecked above, they’re basking in the spirit of hook-driven but edgy synthpop. The lead track of the three songs here is a catchy piece of electro, one step ahead of the three-note, one-finger tunes of Gary Numan and so many of his contemporaries. Taking modern production – and even using that vocoder / autotune vocal effect to good use for once – they still have enough pure pop nous to make them an intelligent-sounding bearer of the legacy of those pioneers of 25 years ago.
